Happy International Women’s day to women all around the globe.
International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities, making a difference in their field and changing their world.
This year’s celebration is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women while calling for greater equality. This year’s theme, “Empowering Women – Empowering Humanity: Picture It!” envisions a world where each woman and girl can exercise her choices, such as participating in politics (yes, one day I hope to see a female Nigerian president), getting an education, making her own money, and living in a society free from violence and discrimination and sexual abuse.
I really like this quote by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon-“To be truly transformative, the post-2015 development agenda must prioritize gender equality and women’s empowerment. The world will never realize 100 per cent of its goals if 50 per cent of its people cannot realize their full potential.” “When we unleash the power of women, we can secure the future for all,”
Google is also celebrating this day with a doodle presenting women in high achieving roles as astronauts, scientists, athletes, teachers, musicians, chefs and writers roles that were once reserved solely for men.
Because you are a woman, you can and yes you will succeed, you are not limited.
This day I remain inspired by the amazing and courageous women I have met on my journey so far, women who are resilient and determined to succeed and make a difference. Today I celebrate my mum and grandma who taught me to be strong, determined, take risks, follow my dreams and never let anyone tell me because I am a woman I can’t succeed.
Happy International Women’s Day.
