The eighth annual World Autism Awareness Day is today April 2, 2015.
What is Autism?
Autism is known as a complex developmental disability. The condition is the result of a neurological disorder that has an effect on normal brain function, affecting development of the person’s communication and social interaction skills.
People with autism have issues with non-verbal communication; they have problems with social interaction. They take things literally. They miss cues, they don’t understand. They don’t get sarcasm. They don’t get jokes. They repeat thing but they can be so sweet, loving and caring. Some of them are even very smart.
What a person with autism need is lots of love, care, attention and acceptance not pity. A person with autism feels love, happiness, sadness and pain just like everyone else. Just because some of them may not express their feelings in the same way others do, does not mean at all that they do not have feelings – THEY DO!! Autistic people are not possessed or demonic; this myth has to be destroyed.
I believe a lot can be done to help people especially children living with autism to live a better, full and meaningful life. Awareness should be created in schools, schools should offer inclusion programs and services for kids living with autism and other learning disability, seminars and workshops should be held frequently by autism organizations to teach and coach parents.
Today I join autism organizations around the world to create awareness and celebrate every adult and child living with Autism!! YOU ARE SPECIAL!
